Overview
Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda’s Gorilla Sanctuary in the Mist
Located in the Virunga Mountains of northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is one of the most iconic wildlife destinations in Africa. Famous for its thriving population of endangered mountain gorillas, the park offers one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the planet—gorilla trekking through misty bamboo forests, where visitors come face-to-face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
The park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area and encompasses five of the eight volcanic mountains that form the Virunga Massif. Its dramatic landscape of volcanic slopes, dense rainforest, and bamboo groves is not only home to mountain gorillas but also to golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes, and a wide variety of birds, including Albertine Rift endemics.
In addition to gorilla and golden monkey trekking, Volcanoes National Park is rich in history and conservation legacy. It was the base for renowned primatologist Dian Fossey, whose work helped bring global attention to gorilla conservation. Visitors can hike to her tomb or explore the beautiful volcanic peaks such as Mount Bisoke and Mount Karisimbi.
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons—June to September and December to February—when trekking conditions are most favorable. However, the park is open year-round and permits are limited, so early booking is essential.
Volcanoes National Park is more than a destination—it’s a life-changing journey into one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories.
