Overview

Tarangire National Park – Land of Giants and Ancient Baobabs

Located just a few hours’ drive from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is a lesser-known but richly rewarding safari destination in northern Tanzania. Covering approximately 2,850 square kilometers, Tarangire is famed for its massive elephant herds, towering baobab trees, and a wild, uncrowded atmosphere that offers a more intimate connection with nature.

During the dry season (June to October), Tarangire becomes a magnet for wildlife. Animals converge around the Tarangire River—the park’s lifeline—creating incredible game-viewing opportunities. Visitors can expect to see large concentrations of elephants, along with buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, impalas, giraffes, and the elusive kudu and oryx, rarely seen in other northern parks. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs are also present, often spotted lounging in the shade or stalking prey.

Birdwatchers will be in paradise, with over 500 bird species recorded, including vibrant lilac-breasted rollers, yellow-collared lovebirds, and the endemic Ashy starling.

What sets Tarangire apart is its rugged beauty—rolling savannah, riverine woodlands, swamps, and vast plains dotted with ancient baobabs. Its quieter environment makes it perfect for those seeking a more relaxed and off-the-beaten-path experience.

The best time to visit is during the dry months from June to October, when wildlife viewing is at its peak. However, the green season (November to May) offers lush landscapes, newborn animals, and spectacular birding.

Tarangire National Park is a hidden treasure—raw, wild, and deeply soulful—waiting to be explored.
