Overview

Queen Elizabeth National Park – Uganda’s Most Iconic Wildlife Playground

Located in western Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the most scenic and ecologically diverse protected areas in East Africa. Spanning the vast expanse between Lake George and Lake Edward, the park features rolling savannah, sparkling crater lakes, wetlands, acacia woodlands, and the lush Maramagambo Forest.

The park is famous for its remarkable biodiversity and is home to nearly 100 species of mammals, including elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions, leopards, and Uganda kobs. One of the park’s most unique highlights is the tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector—an extraordinary sight that draws wildlife lovers from around the world. Boat cruises along the Kazinga Channel offer close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and a stunning variety of birdlife.

Queen Elizabeth is also a birding haven, with over 600 bird species recorded—the highest number in any East African national park. From savannah raptors to colorful forest dwellers and waterbirds, the park is a paradise for ornithologists.

The best time to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. During these months, wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around water sources, and game drive routes are more accessible.

Whether exploring the park’s vast savannah plains, cruising the wildlife-rich Kazinga Channel, or tracking chimpanzees in the nearby Kyambura Gorge, Queen Elizabeth offers a classic and diverse safari experience suitable for all types of travelers.
