Overview
Nyungwe Forest National Park – Rwanda’s Ancient Rainforest Retreat
Tucked away in the southwest of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is a vast, ancient tropical rainforest that offers one of the most immersive and biologically rich experiences in East Africa. Stretching over 1,000 square kilometers, Nyungwe is one of the oldest rainforests on the continent, remarkably untouched and teeming with life.
The park is most famous for its primates, boasting 13 different species, including large populations of chimpanzees and Rwanda’s only troop of black-and-white colobus monkeys, which can be seen in troops numbering over 300 individuals. Guided chimpanzee tracking is a highlight here, giving visitors the chance to follow these intelligent creatures through lush forest trails.
Nyungwe is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 300 bird species recorded, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. Its rich flora, waterfalls, and panoramic mountain views make it a rewarding destination for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers.
The canopy walkway, suspended 50 meters above the forest floor, offers a thrilling way to explore the treetops and spot wildlife from a unique vantage point. The park also offers cultural experiences with nearby communities, blending conservation with local heritage.
The best time to visit Nyungwe is during the dry seasons—June to September and December to February—when trails are easier to hike and visibility is better. However, the park remains green and active year-round.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is a must-visit for travelers seeking serenity, biodiversity, and adventure in one of Africa’s most pristine rainforest ecosystems.
