Overview
Murchison Falls National Park – Where the Nile Roars Through the Wild
Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, lies in the northwestern part of the country, where the mighty River Nile explodes through a narrow 7-meter gorge and plunges over 40 meters down the rocks, forming the thunderous Murchison Falls. This dramatic natural spectacle is the centerpiece of the park and one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world.
The park offers a classic savannah safari experience, home to a diverse range of wildlife including elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and leopards. Its riverine habitats support large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a variety of aquatic birds, including the rare shoebill stork. Game drives, boat safaris along the Nile, and guided nature walks are among the most popular activities in the park.
Bird enthusiasts will find Murchison Falls particularly rewarding, with over 450 recorded bird species. The park’s varied ecosystems—from open savannah to tropical forests—also host primates such as chimpanzees in Budongo Forest Reserve, located on the southern edge of the park.
The best time to visit Murchison Falls is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to September, when wildlife viewing is at its peak and road conditions are favorable. However, the park is open all year round and remains a spectacular destination regardless of the season.
Whether you’re gazing at the thunderous falls or cruising along the Nile with wildlife on both banks, Murchison Falls promises an unforgettable African safari adventure.
