Overview

Jozani Forest – Zanzibar’s Lush Green Heart

Located on the southeastern side of Zanzibar Island, Jozani Forest is the island’s largest remaining natural forest and a haven for nature lovers. Spanning over 50 square kilometers, this tropical rainforest is an ecological paradise, home to a diverse range of wildlife, plants, and unique species found nowhere else in the world.

The highlight of Jozani Forest is the endangered Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey, an iconic species with striking red and white fur. These curious monkeys, once on the brink of extinction, are now thriving in the protected environment of the forest, and visitors can often spot them as they move gracefully through the trees. The forest is also home to other primates like the blue monkey, as well as a variety of bird species, chameleons, and diverse flora, including giant mangroves.

A visit to Jozani Forest offers an educational and immersive experience. Guided tours take visitors along well-maintained nature trails, where you’ll wander beneath the canopy, through swampy wetlands, and across boardwalks surrounded by the mesmerizing sounds of the forest. The Jozani Conservation Centre provides valuable information on the forest’s preservation efforts and the indigenous species that depend on it.

The best time to visit Jozani is during the dry months from June to October, though the forest remains lush and vibrant year-round. This unique forest is a must-see for anyone seeking to connect with Zanzibar’s natural beauty and wildlife.
