Overview

Fish River Canyon – Africa’s Hidden Grand Canyon

Carved over hundreds of millions of years, Fish River Canyon is a breathtaking geological marvel located in southern Namibia. As Africa’s largest canyon and the second-largest in the world after the Grand Canyon, it stretches about 160 kilometers in length, up to 27 kilometers wide, and plunges 550 meters deep. This awe-inspiring chasm offers panoramic vistas, stark desert beauty, and a powerful sense of isolation that captivates every visitor.

The Fish River, which flows intermittently through the canyon, adds a serpentine touch to the dramatic landscape. Though dry for much of the year, the river comes alive during the rainy season, briefly transforming the canyon floor with pools of water and renewed life. Its rugged terrain, layered rock formations, and silence give visitors a deep appreciation for the power of natural erosion and time.

For the adventurous, the Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail is one of the most celebrated multi-day hikes in Africa. Stretching over 85 kilometers, the trail descends into the canyon and follows the riverbed through a raw and untouched wilderness. It’s open from May to September, when temperatures are cooler and conditions safer.

Even for non-hikers, there are several stunning viewpoints—particularly at Hobas Viewpoint—that offer incredible photo opportunities and a chance to take in the vastness of the canyon without the descent.

Remote, dramatic, and humbling, Fish River Canyon is a must-visit for travelers seeking Namibia’s wilder side and a deep connection to Earth’s ancient history.
